Jump into the basics of personal finance! In this course, students learn how to manage money, make smart financial choices, and plan for the future. Through real-life examples and hands-on activities, students build their own financial plans, explore how to choose a college or career, and learn how to start investing. The course also covers topics like how we think about money and even how to start a small business. It’s a fun and practical way to get ready for life after high school.
Are classes live or recorded?
Both. The homework labs are pre-recorded, and the lectures are taught live, and then posted as recordings to the website.
What exactly will the course cover?
You may download the Course Syllabus for the scope & sequence (click button above).
Can I start the class right now? When are the live classes taught?
The course opens Sept 1, 2025 and live classes are taught once per week on Tuesdays at 11am Pacific (2pm Eastern) for the entire academic year. A teaching schedule is included in the Course Syllabus document (click button above) on pages 6-7. Participation in live classes is not required; we post every live lecture recording to the appropriate section immediately following the live class.
I live outside the USA. Can I still use the course?
I hadn't actually thought about making an international version yet as we are still putting together the US version. The basic principles are the same: how to have the right mindset, how to make achievable goals, how to afford higher education, how to have enough money for the lifestyle that you want, how to save to afford to pay cash for things instead of charging and going into debt, paying taxes (although your forms and procedures will be different, the idea is the same that we still have to pay taxes on every dollar we earn), etc.
What states currently require a Personal Finance course for graduation?
AL, CA, CT, FL, GA, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NE, NH, NC, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, UT, VA, WV, WI. However, more states are adding this each year because it is so essential. In 2020, only 8 states has this as a requirement, and only 5 years later 20 more states have added this to their graduation requirement.
But why learn it now? My son/daughter has years to go before they graduate.
It turns out that when we get kids started at a younger age, it is relatively easy for them to continue the practices as adults. But once they turn 18, they have often been so influenced by peers and media that it can become a lifelong struggle to implement good habits. Even after the course, kids will be able to continue applying the basic principles to whatever money they have and earn.
